365 Disaster Books

Samantha MontanoComment

This year I shared 365 disaster books on twitter.

My goal in compiling this list was just to resurface and give a boost to these books. Many of them are with small presses or out of print and have been a bit lost to history but they still have valuable insights. As a collective, these books tell the history of disasters and emergency management.

I’ve also been struck by what is missing from this list. Only a handful of these books were written by people of color. It’s very US-centric. Some events, like Katrina, are much more represented than others. A lot of this has to do with my personal interests but it also has to do with accessibility and who has been given a platform to write about disasters.

It was a pain to keep updated and I definitely did not stick to my once a day posting but I had a lot of fun digging through my bookshelves. I’ve also been introduced to many more disaster books through this process. My “to buy” list is neverending. Give me a couple of years and I can probably do another list of 365.

Most of all I’ve loved hearing about all of you who bought books for yourselves, and others, based on this list!
